So I am a stay at home mom. I’m also a small business owner. Sometimes I look around and think “why am I not working?” Truth is, as a mom, working full time cuts our time with our kid(s) short. I honestly don’t think I would have it any other way. I have a college degree. Two actually. Sometimes I feel like I should be pulling a salary. But then I stop and realize that I am pulling a salary!!!! And I still get to take my son to school and baseball! I get to spend time at home! But I will say this, working from home is not for the faint of heart!
First off, I have to schedule myself. I have to be self driven. I have to set goals and go after those goals. All while the washer is kickin’ in the background. I have to be flexible. If it rains, I have to be able to understand that I won’t get to give that lesson on that day. That means I won’t have that paycheck. But I can reschedule and do it another day. I just have to be flexible and sometimes that means squeezing in a lesson or three on the weekends between barrel racing and church. I also have to be forgiving. That is the hardest part. I have to remember that I am pulling my weight. I am working. I’m not dead weight that my husband has to support. Nope. I’m working. But the best part is… I’m doing what I love!
I love to share my knowledge with others! Teaching riding lessons is something that I am passionate about and I want my students to move forward! I can be a little hard on them. But that is what a coach does! We push our students to be the best they can be! We work on their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses! Watching my little ones go from me leading them to riding solo this week made me so giddy! They are 4 & 6. The ASKED to trot without me leading them! They have been walking and doing little patterns without me leading but this week, both of them, asked to trot solo!!! How cool is that? And I am so blessed to have an awesome sidekick whom takes care of my littles! All 15.3 hands and 1375 pounds of flesh… Lynx takes care of my students! He won’t drop them. He wants them to ride correctly and will wait for me to tell him to move out. It’s so amazing to watch my main barrel horse go from winning money in the 1D to toting around 2,4,6 and a 9 year old kid! And I feel like he really loves it! To think that I would have a horse that was born on our ranch and became one of the fastest, most correct barrel horses I have ever had the pleasure to run that also loves to give lessons is just beyond anything I ever thought possible!
Lessons are just part of my job. I also clean tack and saddles and I am a sales person for supplements (eagle equine and pureform) as well as selling tack on consignment. It’s hard work! But looking back, I think I am doing exactly what I was meant to do. When I grow up, I hope to have a covered arena and a barn full of awesome lesson horses as well as a successful teaching program where I can host camps and group lessons! But for now, I am so tickled to have my five students! I will add that I also have a 15 year old student who has her own unicorn to run! She is now hauling with us and I see a bright future! She has grit and a competitive edge! I helped them find her horse and I can’t wait to see her smoke me in the arena! Most of all, I’m so happy to see her go from totally novice to actually competing! She started with me almost two years ago! She had never ridden! Now she is starting to compete! She is also a cheerleader! So stay tuned for team RES! I have some rising stars in my program!
